Gerakan: Malays already dominate everything

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan Youth has urged national leaders to “stop worrying about racial dominance” and concentrate on economic progress, when Malay people already dominate most aspects of society.

The party youth wing deputy chief, Andy Yong, questioned the basis of statements by the prime minister and the deputy prime minister that Malay dignity had been challenged.

In a statement today, he pointed out that Najib Razak had said that “Malays, too, have the rights. Malays, too, can show that we can stand up when our dignity is torn apart and our leaders mocked and shamed” when speaking about the Red Shirts rally on Malaysia Day. His deputy, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said much the same about the rally, which was called to counter the August 29-30 Bersih 4 demonstration.

Yong said there was no ulterior motive or racial play about the Bersih 4 rally or any issue of the Chinese community questioning the rights of Malays and their dignity.

“Our former premier Tun Mahathir Mohamad also attended the Bersih 4 rally two days in a row. Does that mean Tun is also challenging Malays’ rights and dignity?” Yong said.

He pointed out that “Malays practically dominate everything,” except in entrepreneurship, business, corporate or industry, the professions and the economy, where there is no dominance by a single race.

He said the prime minister and his deputy should be committed to a non-ethnic approach as the basis of their political struggle and concentrate on Malaysia’s economic progress instead of racial dominance, which he said had often been politicized.
