Low Yat Plaza tragedy should never happen again

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15, 2015:

Gerakan will set up a six-member committee to look into the Low Yat Plaza incident last Saturday, said its president Datuk Mah Siew Keong.

Mah said the multi-racial committee, which would include Gerakan vice-presidents Datuk A. Kohilan Pillay and Datuk Dr Asharuddin Ahmad, would look into how the events unfolded especially in the first few hours and the manner in which the authorities had responded to it.

“We will submit our findings and recommendations to the authorities so that racial issues, that can be volatile and sensitive, will not reoccur in the future.

“There has been so much false and distorted stories on social media and too much racism as a result of the incident, which has made us concerned and worried.

“So many news are circulating around that people do not know which one is true which one is false,” he told reporters during a visit to Low
Yat Plaza today.

Mah said Gerakan strongly condemns the attack by the brawlers on journalists and bystanders and expressed regret that it was caused by a mobile phone theft.

He reminded Malaysians not to make unnecessary urgings in regards to the incident, as it could create racial tension.

“Malaysia is still a peaceful country and we must strive to maintain that.

“We stand to lose together if foreigners do not want to visit Malaysia because of perception that the country is unstable.”

Mah also warned that certain quarters were out to instigate the people for personal reasons and they must not be allowed to succeed in doing so.
