Gerakan re-affirms opposition to hudud

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Gerakan will oppose hudud to the end as the party braces itself for the Kota Baru High Court decision on May 7 after the party challenged the constitutionality of implementing hudud in Kelantan.

Party president Datuk Mah Siew Keong expressed his hope the court would find in their favour after the party filed an Originating Summons against the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code 1993 in March.

"Gerakan will submit an appeal if the application is struck out," he said in a press conference today.

The legal team for the party is led by its Youth deputy chief Andy Yong Kim Seng had filed the challenge to stop the implementation of hudud.

The PAS-led Kelantan government had however applied for the suit to be struck out reasoning the High Court did not have jurisdiction over the matter.

The law provides for the death penalty via stoning for offences including adultery and the amputation of limbs for theft.
