Wan Azizah’s double role as lawmaker queried

GEORGE TOWN: The Gerakan National Youth movement has noted that Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng have both explained how PKR President, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, would serve both Kajang where she’s assemblywoman and Permatang Pauh if she’s elected as MP.

The movement’s head Tan Keng Liang noted that Azmin would help Wan Azizah in Kajang while Lim would help her in Permatang Pauh.

Tan wants the PKR President herself to state her stand and not let others speak on her behalf. He was wondering why a local cannot be chosen to represent Permatang Pauh where the PKR leader has been tipped to win as in previous elections when she held the seat.

Wan Azizah, said Tan, would be wearing double hats if she represents both Kajang and Permatang Pauh. He stopped short of asking her to give up Kajang if she wins in Permatang Pauh.

“Wan Azizah must explain how she is going to serve Permatang Pauh while being Kajang representative at the same time,” said Tan. “This is a basic issue that must be answered by her and not anyone else on behalf of her.”

What’s the point of Azmin declaring he will help in Kajang with Lim Guan Eng declaring same in Permatang Pauh?

Then, what is her role for the locals? Is there any point voting for her?

“Permatang Pauh will be better off by voting in a local candidate who will focus 100 per cent on the constituency,” Tan told a group of voters during an event organised by Gerakan Batu Kawan division and Taman Baru Umno branch.

He did not say whether the voters in Permatang Pauh would be making a mistake if they chose Wan Azizah who was already an elected lawmaker in Selangor 300 km away.

The May 7 by-election was created after Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s Petition for Pardon from the Agong on a five-year jail sentence was turned down this time.

Earlier, the Federal Court found no reason to interfere with a Court of Appeal decision to set aside a High Court acquittal and find Anwar guilty as charged on a charge of sodomy.
