Gerakan National President, Y.B. Dato’ Mah Siew Keong condemned PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for resorting to fear mongering by warning that local elections would lead to a repeat of the 13 May, 1969 racial riots. He maintained that the 13 May tragedy has nothing to do with local elections and it was wrong for the PAS president to have arrived at such nonsensical conclusion.

“It was unfortunate that Hadi Awang has resorted to scare tactics for political ends, it is wrong to exaggerate the topic in order to reinforce the idea of racial polarisation at the expense of participatory democracy,” said Mah

Mah urged Hadi Awang to embrace an open and progressive view. He stressed that it is important for politicians to stop contributing to the vicious circle by being discreet in one’s speech or actions. He said Gerakan is supportive of public pledge and aspiration for greater public participation and engagement in policy-making.

In addition, Mah also voiced his support for Datuk Seri Nazir Razak’s call for a moderate approach to resolve disputes and stand up against extremism. He was confident that Datuk Seri Nazir Razak being a successful corporate leader of high calibre and stature is the right man to lead the moderate movement. He concurred with calls to strengthen the momentum for moderate movement and called on more moderate voices to be made audible across the nation in a nationwide effort to curb extremism.
