2015 New Year Message

Gerakan National President

Y.B. Dato’ Mah Siew Keong

This is a special time of the year as we take a pause and review an eventful year we have gone through as a nation.

It is unfortunate that we conclude 2014 on a sad note as the tragedy that befell AirAsia QZ8501 and the devastating floods in east coast states leave us in deep grief and anguish. The recent spate of unfortunate events took a toll on our nation’s morale while we strive to recover from the tragic loss of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and MH17 earlier in the year. In this moment of sadness, let us take time out to remember those who lost their lives in those fateful tragedies. As we grieve the loss of our loved ones, it is important that we stay strong as a nation and show solidarity in face of calamity.

I note with concern the worrying rise of racial and religious extremism we witnessed throughout the year. Those offensive and damaging remarks and utterances violate our social norms, institutions and the very foundation of our nationhood. The spread of hatred and ill-will must be stemmed by adhering to the rule of law and public awakening on the need to remain moderate in our thoughts and actions at all costs. We should undertake conscious introspection as we face this crossroads with meaningful and effective internalisation of moderation, rationality and most importantly our commonality as Malaysians. I call upon my fellow citizens to accept and respect each other for we share a common fate and destiny in this land. In the end, we are all Malaysians and we must defend and protect our "Malaysianness".

We have endured a rather difficult year but indomitable human spirit gives us the capacity to see it through. No matter how many times we may fall, we will find the strength to get back up and thrive once again. I believe persistence begets progress and despite all adversities, we can and must accomplish what we set out to achieve. Each of us has something important to offer in our civic life, and the New Year provides a timely opportunity to recommit ourselves to the ideals of Malaysia and by giving back to our beloved country.

Let us pray for a better year ahead. On behalf of Gerakan, I wish all Malaysians a Happy New Year.
