Gerakan Vice President Dr. Asharuddin Ahmad said the party is deeply saddened by the news that AirAsia flight QZ8501 en route from Surabaya to Singapore lost contact with air traffic control yesterday morning. On behalf of the party, he offered sympathies to families of passengers and crew members on board the missing flight.

“It is a very trying and difficult time for the families of passengers and crew members of flight QZ8501, they are in the thoughts and prayers of every Gerakan member,” said Asharuddin.

In wake of the yet another aviation tragedy that struck the nation within a year, Asharuddin said Gerakan calls for cooperation and solidarity amid multinational search and rescue (SAR) efforts to locate the missing plane.

Asharuddin urged all Malaysians and our fellow neighbours in ASEAN to stay strong, resilient and optimistic in the face of uncertainty while SAR efforts are underway. He called on authorities to make timely decision to expand the search area and also intensify the SAR efforts with hope of locating the missing within the golden hour as time is of the essence.

Asharuddin also called on the public to rally behind AirAsia and MAS in wake of aviation tragedies that befell the nation in a year that hit both airliners. He even revealed that Party President, Y.B. Dato’ Mah Siew Keong continues to keep faith with AirAsia after the incident as he is scheduled to take a flight by the low-cost carrier to Terengganu tomorrow to inspect the flood situation in east coast and coordinate relief efforts.

Asharuddin said the Gerakan prays for the wellbeing and safety of all passengers and crew members on board the flight QZ8501 and hopes the missing aircraft would be recovered soon so that families could find the closure and solace they need from this tragedy.
