Gerakan sets up flood relief units to provide humanitarian aid in worse-hit states

Press statement by

Gerakan National President

Y.B. Dato’ Mah Siew Keong

26 December 2014

Gerakan National President, Y.B. Dato’ Mah Siew Keong said the party is very concerned about situation in most flood-hit states that continues to worsen. He noted with extreme concern that heavy rain is expected to continue in both Terengganu and Kelantan while extremely high water levels along with strong currents and bad weather are hampering efforts to reach flood victims and send them aid.

However, Mah was hopeful that despite the vast devastation and huge number of flood victims, rescue teams made up of personnel from various government agencies as well as volunteers are working hard to find ways to reach evacuation centres and distribute aid to all victims affected by the floods.

Mah revealed that the party will convene an emergency Central Committee meeting on tomorrow morning to discuss the flood situation in flood-hit states and also to coordinate disaster relief efforts. He also said that Gerakan has established flood relief units in affected states to provide humanitarian aid to flood victims. Mah has instructed Gerakan Headquarters as well as state offices in Pahang, Perak, Terengganu and Kelantan to provide as much help as possible to the victims, while efforts are also underway to deliver necessities such as food and clothing to worse-hit-areas.

“The party is very concerned about the worsening situation in several worse-hit states, reports from the ground is less optimistic. I have approved disaster relief funds from the party to help victims affected in this devastating flood. Both national and state offices are mobilising resources and manpower to offer help in affected areas, we are trying our very best to help those in need,” said Mah.

Mah also called on the public to do their part in helping the flood victims by making a donation or volunteering for flood relief efforts. Interested individuals or parties may contact Gerakan HQ at 03-92876868 or email to gerakan@gerakan.org.my.
