‘Selangor Menteri Besar should explain stamping of bibles’

Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang has called on Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali to give an explanation to the Christian community on the recent banning and stamping of the Bibles Society Malaysia’s (BSM) Malay and Iban-language bibles.

In a statement today, Tan said the explanation was necessary as Christians deserved to know why Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais), a body under the state government, stamped the Malay and Iban-language Bibles with warning stamps.

“Even if the Selangor Pakatan government refused to apologise over the desecration and ban of the bibles, it should, at the very least, provide a logical explanation as to why the bibles needed to be “stamped” and banned from the state,” he said citing Azmin’s silence on the matter since it broke two days ago.

In calling out for fairness to the Christian community in the country, Tan urged Azmin to be brave in coming forward and explaining why the state religious authorities desecrated and banned the bibles.

“This is clearly contrary to the pledge of Pakatan Rakyat to ensure moderation and freedom of religion in states administered by them.”

On Sunday, an online news portal reported the BSM’s demand for an apology from Jais for confiscating 30 copies of the bibles and returning them with a stamp which banned distribution of the book to Muslims.
