Make More Spots Available In IPTA For Chinese Students - Gerakan

KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 22 (Bernama) -- Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia has asked for more places for outstanding Chinese students to further their studies in public institutions of higher learning (IPTA) according to their preferred field.

Gerakan Deputy President Datuk Dr Cheah Soon Hai said although many Chinese students do well in their studies, they fail to secure a spot in courses of their choice because of insufficient spots.

He said student intake policies need to be reviewed so that Chinese students are also given the opportunity to pursue courses they are keen on in public universities.

"We are concerned about this issue because eventhough they have done their best to score good grades to grab a spot in public universities, because of the lack of space they are unable to do what they like.

"I hope the relevant quarters can review intake policies more transparently so that these students can study what they are interested in," he told reporters after officiating the 33rd Terengganu Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia delegate's meeting.

He said there may be methods which need to be practised such as advertising in newspapers on the number of spots open for Chinese students according to the course in the university, or the university can announce online regarding the requirements to take up a course.
