Gerakan bangs Guan Eng over handling of airport issue

GEORGE TOWN, July 8: Penang Gerakan today slammed Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng over what it claimed was his lackadaisical attitude in handling the airport issue.

Its secretary, Oh Tong Keong, said Lim seemed to be only interested in playing politics with such an important matter which concerned the future of Penang’s development.

“If Lim was serious about settling the issue, he would not have dragged on for about three weeks before writing a letter to the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) asking for a RM600-million allocation for the Penang airport’s proposed expansion.

“Disappointedly, the letter was not accompanied with any blueprint or supporting information by the DAP-led state government on how the airport would be expanded,” he said in a statement here.

Oh said the Penang airport’s immediate need was an upgrade of facilities, especially additional airport stands, and not an additional runway as requested by the state government.

He also slammed Lim for giving the impression that the Penang state government had no objection to the proposed airport in Kulim, Kedah, as long as Penang airport got upgraded.

Oh urged Lim to clear the air and clarify to Penangites his stand regarding the new airport in Kulim if the federal government approved RM600 million for the Penang airport.

He said Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Teng Chang Yeow had repeatedly reminded Lim about his mistakes and that Lim should have “knocked on the right door” to get things done.

Earlier, Penang International Airport senior manager Mohd Arif Jaafar was reported as having expressed the need for more aircraft stands and upgrading of existing facilities instead of a new runway.

“But Lim did not mention this in his letter to the Prime Minister. It seems the airport’s view was not taken into consideration,” Oh said, reiterating Penang Gerakan’s stand against the new airport in Kulim.
