Fearless Gerakan slams Isma’s “generosity” remark

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27: Gerakan vice president, Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai refuted Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) president Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman’s remarks who called on Gerakan and MCA leaders to be grateful over cabinet appointments announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Wednesday.

He was displeased with the call and described the remarks as politically obsolete and insubstantial.

“Isma’s latest outburst clearly denotes that the group is simply out of touch with socio-political atmosphere of the day as it is obvious that the alleged political serfdom has never existed in Barisan Nasional (BN),” Lau said in a statement today.

He stressed that all 13 BN component parties stand on equal footing in the political coalition with principled adherence to consociationalism power sharing and consensus democracy in decision-making.

Lau chided Isma chief for questioning PM’s prerogative to appoint cabinet ministers and held that the unwise remarks were a blatant display of ethnocentrism and sectarianism.

He asserted that Gerakan is undeterred and will continue to speak without fear or favor with regards to national interest and issues of public concern as the party is committed in defending the rights and interests of all Malaysians.

Lau continued that election results must not be the yardstick to political cooperation and positions as it is the people’s mandate that serves as the very source for political legitimacy in democratic Malaysia.

He also stressed that it is the common aspiration to drive the country forward and consolidating national unity that bonds all BN component parties together and pledge voluntary servitude for the country.

Lau warned Isma to stop expressing divisive and damaging remarks and embrace an open-hearted 1Malaysia perspective to contribute to nation building in positive ways.
