New lease of life for Gerakan

GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong’s victory in the Teluk Intan by-election on May 31 has given the party a new lease of life.
The party’s Penang secretary Oh Tong Keong said Mah’s victory had boosted the party’s confidence at all levels to face the next general election.
He said the victory was also a timely boost to revitalise the party in Penang, which had remained Gerakan’s political bastion since 1969, despite consecutive general election defeats.
He said the Teluk Intan by-election showed that unity and cooperation, not only among Gerakan leaders and members but also among Barisan Nasional component parties, were vital for electoral success.
He said Mah would not have won without the unity and cooperation.
“The by-election showed that it was crucial to pick the right local candidates and to deploy correct strategies. No party can take the voters for granted.
“Gerakan had learnt some invaluable lessons from Teluk Intan.
“We shall work to improve our election performance in Penang,” Oh told FMT here today.
Mah won the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat with a 238-vote majority over Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud from DAP.

Following his victory, Mah has now been appointed as a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
