BN will make its stand on hudud when time is right: DPM

GEORGE TOWN: The Barisan Nasional (BN) will make a clear stand on the Private Members' Bill (Hudud Law) when the time is right, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin .

Speaking at a press conference held after meeting Penang Umno leaders here today, Muhyiddin said the BN would first study the Hudud law proposed by PAS so that it was not contradictory to Islam.

"In principle, as a Muslim, I feel we should be together in this....we should accept the laws as stated in our religion.

"As Muslims, it is wrong if we reject it...but we do not know what would be proposed. So BN will look at the proposal properly and there may come a time when we will announce our stand," he said.

Kelantan PAS through its Parliament members is reported will table the Bill in the Dewan Rakyat to get the approval to implement the state's Syariah Criminal Code Enactment (2) 1993 for the purpose at the latest by December this year.

"So when it is presented in Parliament, we in BN, whether in Umno or not, Muslim or not...we will discuss and study (the matter)," he said.

On the re-appointment of Teng Chang Yeow as chairman of Penang BN, Muhyiddin said it was well-received as he was experienced in unifying efforts as well as cooperation between the BN component parties.

He said what was important now was Penang BN's efforts in formulating strategic measures with leaders of component parties to redeem its defeat in Penang.

"It is a big challenge for him (Teng) and the others but if there is a will and cooperation, as well a strong spirit of unity, I am confident, it can be implemented," he said.
