Leaders Offer Condolences Over Karpal Singh's Death

KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and other leaders today offered their condolences to the family of former DAP chairman Karpal Singh who died early today in a road accident.

 "(My) condolences to the family of the late YB Karpal Singh. May the family members remain strong in their moment of grief," said Muhyiddin in a Twitter message.

 Karpal Singh, the MP for Bukit Gelugor, was killed at 1.10 am after the MPV he was travelling in from Kuala Lumpur to Penang was involved in a collision with a lorry ahead of it at Km306.1 of the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung in Kampar, Perak.

 Also killed in the accident was Karpal Singh's personal assistant, Michael Cornelius, in his 40s.

 MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai posted on his blog: "We are deeply saddened by the news of Karpal Singh's sudden demise. Our most heartfelt condolences to his family".


 MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel said Karpal Singh's death was a huge loss to politics in the country.

 "It does not matter who he had represented. He was a good and capable leader," he said.

 Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said: "Deepest condolences to (the) family of MP YB Karpal Singh on his passing. Thoughts and prayers are with you in these difficult moments."

 Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said: "RIP (rest in peace) YB Karpal Singh. Condolences to his family from me and my family and Wanita BN (Barisan Nasional).

 MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said Karpal Singh's death had robbed the nation of a credible lawyer and politician.

 Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong said the veteran politician would be remembered as a person who had fought without fear or favour.

 "Karpal's demise is a great loss to the country. I was shocked and sad to receive the news at 4 am. Although, we were different in our political stands, personally to me, Karpal was a very friendly and helpful person," he said.


 Mah said the country's law fraternity had also lost a very experienced and respected lawyer.

 In DUNGUN, Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal extended condolences to the family of Karpal Singh.

 "I offer my condolences to the family members and friends over the demise of the veteran leader," he told reporters.

 Mohd Shafie said Karpal Singh had contributed a lot to politics in the country.
