Opposition leaders should advise supporters not to speculate on MH370, says Gerakan sec-gen

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan secretary-general Liang Teck Meng on Thursday called for the Opposition leaders to advise their supporters to not raise any further conflict and speculations on the MH370 tragedy.

Liang during a press conference in Parliament said he has come across multiple images and messages circulated online which in many ways affects the image of the nation.

"Most of the image says things like 'DAP and Pakatan all the way’ and 'Barisan Nasional government are murderers'.

"Such allegations are in no way helping the situation as the nation is already under international spotlight and the Government has been doing everything possible to aid the families affected by this awful tragedy," he said.

In commenting on the statement by Home Minister Zahid Ibrahim on Wednesday, Liang said there are multiple foreign media who are playing up the issue and manipulating facts, in turn brewing the fury of the families of those who have perished.

"People should understand that the jetliner did not only carry people from China but Malaysia and many other countries, and though we practice freedom of speech, people should be sensitive to the situation as such statements cannot be compromised.

"Instead of playing the blame game, this is the time to appreciate humanity which has brought the whole world together in an attempt to locate the aircraft and pray for the wellbeing of those onboard.

Liang stressed that everyone would like to know what exactly happened on board to attain a better sense of closure.

"In the meantime however, it is best to put aside political ideologies and quit making making malicious statements against one another.

"Ultimately it is about supporting the distressed families and protecting the image of the country," he added.
