Gerakan is appalled by reports that beached in picturesque Batu Feringhi, Penang has been contaminated by black coloured substance, which could possibly be E.coli. Gerakan Wanita Secretary General, Jayanthi Devi Balaguru said this incident is an embarrassment to Penang and Malaysia, and it is compounded by the fact that 2014 is also ‘Visit Malaysia Year’.

“This who fiasco is unacceptable as Batu Feringghi is one of the most popular beach spots in the country attracting thousands of tourists each year. The state government must be accountable and immediately take remedial steps to ensure that the situation does not escalate to the point that no one would want to visit the beaches.”.”

Jayanthi also pointed out that polluted waters does not only tarnish our image but also possess a hazard to the local population as well. Jayanthi said reports have suggested that the source of the pollution could also be caused by the release of effluents by irresponsible parties. If that is found to be the case then strict action must follow.

“I also agree with the Health Department that contaminated parts of the Batu Feringghi beach stretch should be closed to the public until it is cleaned up. This is to ensure that the health and safety of visitors are not put at risk. Also, the unbridled developments in the area and the lack of proper sanitation management facilities have also been attributed to the cause of the pollution and I believe all these angles have to be looked into. The Department of the Environment should also launch an investigation and hold the state government accountable if any shortcomings are identified. ”
