Gerakan honours Tan Gim Hwa

GEORGE TOWN (Jan 14, 2014): The late Datuk Tan Gim Hwa's (pix) coffin was draped with Gerakan's flag at his residence in Halaman Macalister today.

The former Penang Gerakan chairman was given the honour by the party for his past contributions when he was spearheading the state chapter.

Leading the group to place the flag was state chairman Teng Chang Yeow, state secretary Oh Tong Keong, state Gerakan Youth chief Hn'g Chee Wey and Wanita chief Datuk Ng Siew Lai.

Teng said Tan was accorded the honour for his efforts in strengthening the party.

He added that all differences should be set aside following Tan's death as things that happened in the past should not be brought up again.

" Past is past, " he told a press conference at Tan's wake today.

In April last year, Tan was invited by Teng, then Gerakan secretary-general, to rejoin the party after his membership was terminated in 2000 due to disciplinary reasons.

However, Tan declined although he did attend a gathering of party division leaders where Teng made the offer.

On Monday night, former Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon also came to pay his last respects to Tan.

Koh said Tan had put a lot of effort into developing the party, especially with regards to the purchase of the party's state headquarters.

" He (Tan) has contributed a lot to the party," he said after attending the wake.
