Gerakan identified election candidates 3 years ago: Koh

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 17 (Bernama) -- Gerakan had identified its candidates for the 13th General Election (GE), three years ago, said party president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

"We identified the candidates, three years ago, and they have been under evaluation ever since, to ensure eligibility for the job," he said.

At a press conference after the party's central meeting in its headquarters in Cheras here, Koh said the candidates were currently undergoing final evaluation before the party could name them for the GE.

Asked to comment on asset declaration by the opposition, he said, as a matter of principle, he agreed to the practice but it must be done by everyone and fairly.

"We must be fair to everyone and consider every aspect. For instance, some politicians come from successful business families and that factor must be considered, as well.

"The assets from such income should not be made an issue," he said. On another matter, Koh confirmed the appointment of the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairmen in Taiping and Beruas, Perak.

He said Datuk Tan Lian Hoe was BN chairman in Taiping while Datuk Chang Ko Youn, who is also party deputy president, was Beruas chairman.

Koh said the appointments were finalised last month.
