Gerakan Youth slams Selangor UMNO’s call to charge whistleblower in ‘shower room canteen’ case Dominic Lau: Charging whistleblower is wrong and will deter people from reporting such incidents Press statement by Gerakan Youth Secretary General

Gerakan Youth Secretary General Dr. Dominic Lau today slams Selangor UMNO’s call to the authorities to investigate the parent responsible for highlighting the SK Seri Pristana meals in shower room incident under the Sedition Act 1948. He said he is dismayed with the unreasonable call from Selangor Umno liaison committee chairperson Datuk Seri Noh Omar as he completely disagrees with the call to investigate the parent for revealing the mismanagement of the school.
Dr. Dominic Lau firmly maintains that charging whistleblower in the ‘shower room canteen’ case is wrong and against the public policy as it will deter people from reporting such incidents to the authorities in the future. He added, if we start charging whistleblowers, no one will speak up and the false reality of a well-off society is detrimental to our nation's future as we seek to root our wrong doing by encouraging our citizens to be vigilant and report alleged wrong doings without fear and favour.
Dr. Dominic Lau also called on the police not to abuse the Sedition Act 1948 as there is an existing pledge by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib in July 2012 to abolish it. The act should not be used to stifle genuine and legitimate voices, opinions or complaints that are constructive and seek to nurture and not destroy. The freedom of speech should always be upheld in democracy and Malaysiaas a democratic country is no exception to this.
