Pat on the back for the cops Press Statement by Penang Gerakan Secretary Goh Kheng Sneah

Gerakan has lauded the police for reducing the crime index in Penang, saying it is important for everybody to feel safe at all times, whether at home, at work, at shopping centers or in the parks.

Penang Gerakan secretary Goh Kheng Sneah said the police needed a “pat on the back” as they have been working hard around the clock to reduce crime in the state.

Goh said the previous Penang BN state administration was equally concerned and had cooperated well with the police, which are under the jurisdiction of the federal government, to ensure that the crime rate in Penang was kept at the lowest possible level.

“It makes a great difference to see the presence of policemen in residential, banking and commercial areas as well as at tourist places including the tourism belt of Batu Ferringhi,” Goh said in a statement, adding that the people would always welcome the policemen’s friendliness and easy-to-approach attitude.

Goh was commenting on newspaper reports today quoting Penang Chief Police Officer Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob as saying that Penang’s crime rate had dropped by 26% in the first six months of the year.

“The rate of petty crime such as robbery and snatch theft has fallen by 51% compared with the same period in 2009,” said Ayub.

Goh congratulated Ayub for his good leadership and guidance to the Penang police force.
