Gerakan condemns Khir Toyo for irresponsible and dangerous remarks. Press statement by Gerakan deputy president Datuk Chang Ko Youn

Gerakan blasted former Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Khir Toyo over his call for a revision of government policies deemed favourable to the Chinese.

Gerakan deputy president Datuk Chang Ko Youn said Khir's remarks were irresponsible, dangerous, idiotic and "racist" in nature.

“Khir is not a friend of the Barisan Nasional. He has raised racial sentiments. This is not good for our multi-racial society,” said Chang in a statement.

Chang said it was exactly such remarks from BN leaders that had driven voters, especially the Chinese, in the case of Hulu Selangor, to support the opposition.

“An extreme and vindictive remark that calls for depriving fair and just treatment for all Malaysians is clearly against the concept of inclusiveness and social justice advocated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s 1Malaysia leadership.”

“All BN leaders must commit to help Najib to realize his vision of 1Malaysia in words and deeds, otherwise the credibility and reputation of BN as a political coalition that claims to represent all Malaysians would be questioned and even disputed,” Chang said.

Chang said it was high time for the BN leadership to “bite the bullet” and work together as a team to address the Chinese community’s woes and to regain their confidence and support.

“Finger pointing and calling to punish any party or community will only aggravate the situation and certainly not in the interest of the nation.”

Khir had posted in his personal blog that government policies favorable to the Chinese should be "reviewed" to give greater recognition to the Malays and Indians.

This was because during the Hulu Selangor by-election, the Malay and Indian voters supported the Barisan Nasional while the Chinese voters did not.
