Make use of Speaker’s Corner Press statement by Liang Teck Meng, Gerakan Youth national vice-chief

Gerakan Youth national vice-chief Liang Teck Meng today urged university students to make full use of Speaker’s Corner at their campus to present their views and opinions on issues of public interests.

Liang said since they are future leaders of the country, it would be good for them to have a critical mind to discuss, analyse and dwell on issues and current happenings in a better perspective.

“With better exposure and easy access to information through the internet and the new media, our younger generation, especially university students, should move forward progressively, and the last thing that we would like to have is to allow Speaker's Corner stands empty,” said Liang in a statement.

However, Liang hoped the authorities concerned would not impose too much restrictions or arbitrarily punish students for using the Speaker’s Corner

“In fact, the authorities should encourage more people to use the Corner to give ideas and views,” he added.

The Higher Education Ministry has expressed disappointment over the poor response to the speaker’s corner set up at public universities.

“At some of the public universities, there is no activity at all at the speaker’s corner since it was launched four months ago,” deputy minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said at a press conference in Putrajaya on Wednesday.
