Dialogue with govt a positive step, says Gerakan Press Statement by Penang Gerakan Chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan

The government and all concerned parties or groups have to be proactive to resolve problems faced by the people, said Penang Gerakan Chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan.

He said the social economic problems faced by the Indian community which were raised by Hindraf could be thrashed out through consultation and discussion instead of confrontation.

“All these problems are real and they must be resolved urgently. It will be more effective if the government resolves these problems, together with the affected and concerned parties, including Hindraf,” said Dr Teng when commenting on a statement by Hindraf leader P. Wathamoorthy who had proposed for a dialogue with the Prime Minister.

The chairman of the outlawed group, who is in self-exile in London, said he was prepared to meet Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to outline the grouses that had pushed Hindraf to mobilize members of the Indian community to a protest rally on Nov 25, 2007.

“It is timely for the PM and the government of the day to engage Hindraf and the Makkal Sakthi movement in a dialogue to discuss ways and means to tackle the various problems afflicting the Indian community in Malaysia,” said Waythamoorthy.

He added that Hindraf and the Makkal Sakthi movement had always been open to initiating an open and honest discussion with the relevant authorities to help solve the socio-eocnomic ills plaguing the Indian community.
Dr Teng said Gerakan welcomed Waythamoorthy’s overture to have a dialogue with the government, saying it was a positive step.

He said the social economic ills, education problems and citizenship status issue faced by the Indian community should not be treated as problems of the Indian community alone. “These problems should be treated as Malaysian problems.”
“Therefore, these problems must be resolved by the government and all Malaysians rationally, with cool head and minimum politicizing,” Dr Teng added.
