Good idea to stop special rights of Malays for a while, Gerakan Press statement by Gerakan Youth Secretary-General Dominic Lau

Gerakan Youth has welcomed National Unity and Integration Department director-general Datuk Azman Amin Hassan’s suggestion that the special rights of the Malays be stopped for a while.

Gerakan Youth secretary-general Dominic Lau said it would be an important step towards realizing the 1Malaysia concept.

“It will help the Malays to become more independent and compete with others.” said Lau, adding that the government should allow all Malaysians compete under the same condition.

In an interview with New Sunday Times, Azman said although under the Constitution, Malays have got all these special rights, we can stop this for a while – maybe for 10 years – and see whether Malays can stand and compete on their own.

“Although the Constitution is there, it doesn’t necessarily mean we should implement these rights. But the government should have the political will to hold this experiment. It’s not easy,” said Azman.
