Good way to foster interaction, Gerakan Youth Press statement by Gerakan Youth Chief Lim Si Pin

Gerakan Youth said Information Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim had hit the right tune by asking TV and radio stations to provide fair coverage of the various communities in the country.

Youth Chief Lim Si Pin said it would be a good way to foster greater interaction and cultural exchanges amongst the various communities in the country.

“Reaching out to the various communities and highlighting their cultural activities, festivals and programmes will also enhance national unity and a greater sense of belonging that we are all Malaysians,” he said in a statement.

“In fact, those staying in West Malaysia should know more of what’s happening in East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) and vice versa, and the mass media such as TV, radio stations and newspapers can play this role effectively,” Lim added.

Lim proposed that the Ministry could ask TV stations to introduce a travelogue similar to the one shown by China’s CCTV when its crew visited places of interests and the various communities in China to introduce their cultures and activities to China itself and the outside world.

On Thursday, Rais said that TV and radio stations – both government and private-owned – must provide fair coverage of the various communities in the country.
The Information, Communication and Culture Minister said Malaysians should have programmes that depict the culture of its people and their aspirations.

Speaking after launching the MIC’s Internet portal in Kuala Lumpur, he said: “We want to ensure that these programmes promote unity as well as the 1Malaysia concept.”
