PRESS STATEMENT BY TENG CHANG YEOW SECRETARY GENERAL, PARTI GERAKAN RAKYAT MALAYSIA

The Central Working Committee (CWC) of Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia met on the evening of 31 May 2009 to discuss the intended resignation of Huan Cheng Guan, the Party’s Vice President, as reported in the newspapers.

As of the evening of the CWC meeting, the Party HQ has yet to receive his notification of resignation. His intention to resign was made known through statements he made in the media. The Party’s Constitution required “a member who wishes to resign from the Party shall give 30 days’ notice in writing to his Branch Secretary and a copy to the CWC through the Secretary General….”.

While respecting Huan’s rights to express his views, the CWC viewed his recent media statements, particularly those ridiculing the Party in the vernacular press as having gone overboard and had badly tarnished the party’s image. His action had caused dissension and division in the Party, which is unacceptable to the CWC.

As such, the CWC had decided that disciplinary action be instituted against him, in accordance to the provisions of the Party’s Constitution. A show cause letter will be issued to him, which he has to reply within 14 days.

The CWC also issued reminders to all members to observe strict party discipline and protect the image of the party at all times. All disagreement or criticisms should be conveyed through proper party channel available and not through the media.
