IF UNABLE TO SOLVE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM, YEO BEE YIN SHOULD RESIGN, SAID DOMINIC LAU

PRESS STATEMENT BY
GERAKAN NATIONAL PRESIDENT
DATUK DR DOMINIC LAU HOE CHAI

JULY 31, 2019

Gerakan President Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai was surprised that the government might cancel the request for Lynas to return rare earth waste to Australia as a condition for renewal of licenses. He asked Yeo Bee Yin, the Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Climate Change and Environment to explain.

He said that according to the decision of the cabinet, the Malaysian government will send Yeo Bee Yin to visit Australia and face-to-face negotiations with the Australian government to discuss how to solve the problem of rare earth waste. However, it is a pity that the meeting has been extended. There is still no new date for visiting Australia, and now there is such a message that people, especially the people of Kuantan are disappointed.

"I believe that many people are as anxious as Gerakan to know if the government will really cancel the requirement for Lynas to ship rare earth waste back to Australia as a renewal license. Because the PH leaders have always told the people the rare earth plant is extremely dangerous. It is toxic and emits harmful radiation to the human body, which seriously affects people's health."

He said today in a statement that Singapore Straits Times reported that Malaysian cabinet has discussed the feasibility of Lynas’s construction of a permanent waste storage tank (PDF) in Malaysia, and will announce it next month before the expiration of Lynas existing license.

He said PH U-turned on the Lynas issue after took over federal government, and even identified several areas to develop rare earth industry, to make rare earths become the country's new wealth.

He stressed that PH promised once took over federal government, PH will close down Lynas rare earth plant. Now PH has been in power for more than one year, it is time to honor their manifesto, unless Lynas promises to ship the waste away from Malaysia.

He also challenged the DAP to declare its withdrawal from PH and apologies to the people if DAP fails to do so.

In addition, after Yeo Bee Yin became the minister, she can't solve many environmental problems, such as Pasir Gudang air pollution and Sungai Petani foreign rubbish issue. She should resign and let someone more capable to replace her.
