GERAKAN PLEASED TO SEE HOME MINISTRY'S DECISION TO SHORTEN THE TIME FOR APPROVAL OF CITIZENSHIP

PRESS STATEMENT BY
GERAKAN NATIONAL PRESIDENT
DATUK DR DOMINIC LAU HOE CHAI

JULY 30, 2019

Gerakan President Datuk Dr Dominic Lau is pleased to see the Home Ministry's decision to shorten the time for approval of citizenship from three years to one year.

He said that since 2015 Gerakan has been committed to assisting native-born Malaysians with red IC to apply for citizenship and to seek simplification of citizenship application procedures from the Home Ministry.

"Then BN cabinet had agreed citizenship for the people who borned and lived in Malaysia before independence, and reduced the original oral examination from one year to one month. The police investigation eased from 2 years to 53 days."

He pointed out that the PH government has now shortened the application period for citizenship to one year, which is even more encouraging for those who hold red IC or stateless.

He issued a statement today, "When  Gerakans successfully assisted the red IC holders, they were very happy to tell us that they finally can travel abroad with the family and fulfill their civic responsibilities.  "

He suggested government should strictly supervise the application  to avoid corruption and fraud, or some unqualified people become Malaysian citizens.
