PH GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE A GOVERNMENT OF AND FOR ALL MALAYSIANS

PRESS STATEMENT BY

GERAKAN NATIONAL PRESIDENT

DATUK DR DOMINIC LAU HOE CHAI

MARCH 15, 2019

Gerakan National President, Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai questioned the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government for perpetuating race-based economic policy after Entrepreneur Development Minister, Redzuan Mohd Yusof was reportedly announced that the new Malay economic policy will be a realignment of the New Economic Policy launched in 1971. He opined that the PH government is backtracking on its Malaysian agenda.

“While Gerakan does not dispute the fact that there are poor Malays in the country, Redzuan is missing the point that there is also a huge number of non-Malays who are struggling to survive. Poverty is color-blind and color-blind policy is needed to address social woes and help the rakyat,” said Dr Dominic Lau.

According to a finding by DM Analytic in 2018, half of Malaysian Chinese are earning a salary of lesser than RM 2,350 which is just above the B40 category. Khazanah Research also concurred last year that the income gap has actually doubled which puts more Malaysians in relative poverty. The nation needs a good economic policy to put our economy back on track as a whole, PH government should not sidestep or deny their own failure.

“We hope this announcement by the PH government is not a mitigating action to the twin by-election losses and being used as a counterweight to the UMNO-PAS union to draw more Malay support for PH,” said Dr Dominic Lau.

Dr Dominic Lau reminded PH to keep politics apart from government administration, PH should be a government of and for all Malaysians. Any policy introduced by the government should be need-based instead of race-based.

Dr Dominic Lau urged DAP as a member of the PH government to state its stand on the announcement of a new Malay economic policy. He said DAP with 42 MPs and almost 95% Chinese support in the GE14 to speak up and offer meaningful representation for Malaysians who hope to see the end of race-based policies. It was the reason why strong mandate was given to DAP in the GE14 and DAP leaders should end their deafening silence and walk the talk as they have a political and moral duty to do so.
