Install more safety signboards near school, council urged

PENANG Gerakan has raised its concerns over the safety of pedestrians outside SJK(C) Kwang Wah in Sungai Nibong following a reported hit-and-run case there end last month.

Its vice-chairman Oh Tong Keong said the council should put up a yellow signboard to warn oncoming motorists to slow down and repaint the faded zebra crossings.

“There is no signboard here and this puts the school children and their parents’ safety at risk,” he told reporters in front of the school on Monday.

In the 6.50pm incident on Sept 25, a 42-year-old accountant lost two of her teeth after she was knocked down by a motorcycle at a pedestrian crossing outside the school. The motorcyclist who had beat the red light fled the scene.

“It has been a month since the incident and the council has not taken any action,” Oh claimed.

Also present was Penang Gerakan Batu Uban constituency coordinator Dr Kiew Hen Chong.
