2017 Labour Day Message

2017 Labour Day Message

Gerakan National President cum

Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities

Y.B. Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong

Today, we celebrate the achievements of workers. Labour Day has always been a very important date for the 14.8 million-strong Malaysian workers and communities around the world. We work hard to earn a living, to provide for our family and build a nation. Each and every one of us makes great efforts on a daily basis in different jobs, roles and responsibilities within this society, we the workers deserve to be greeted and respected on this special day.

Apart from honouring Malaysian workers and recognising their contributions, we should also be mindful and do more towards improving workers’ rights, welfare and development in globalising economies. It is worthwhile to note that the government is committed to building a young, educated and skilled human resource under the 11th Malaysia Plan. We have witnessed the positive measures taken up by the government such as a study to determine the starting salary for each sector to improve salary schemes; building 35% skilled workforce by 2020 and assurance that minimum wage policy will be reviewed constantly and a healthy median wage reflecting rising cost of living.

It is clear that the working and living conditions of our workers will never fail to get noticed, more so in a special day dedicated to the working men and women. We in Gerakan remain devoted to the long-established good ties with unions through sincere and continued engagement. We are proud and will continue to advocate ideas and speak up for empowerment and protection of workers as one of our main political struggles.

Today, let us demonstrate the strength of working people standing together while calling on all parties to show greater commitment to improving the lives of all ordinary workers in Malaysia. Today is an important reminder of our commitment to bring positive changes to our workers.

On behalf of Gerakan, I would like to express my greatest appreciation to the men and women who worked tirelessly for the betterment of our nation.
