Gerakan Deputy President Dato’ Dr Cheah Soon Hai said Gerakan condemns in the strongest terms today a statement by Tasik Gelugor MP Datuk Shabudin Yahya’s suggested that child victims can have a good life if they marry their rapists. He said it was an affront to not just women and children but also an insult to victims of rape, attempted rape and sexual assaults.

Cheah totally agreed with Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan’s statement who maintained that marriages between child victims and rapists are unacceptable. He called on Shabudin to apologise publicly and retract his statement.

Cheah concurred that laws are enacted to protect our children. He said any man who has sex with a girl under 16 years of age commits statutory rape regardless he received consent. Shabudin was wrong in suggesting that it is alright for child victims to marry their rapists, he must stop justifying for men who rape.

“Shabudin must apologise and retract his statement, child marriage is not a license to legitimize sexual advances against women or children, neither it is a lawful way to offer impunity to rapists, he was wrong to surmise casually that the victims can lead a better life by marrying their rapists, it was absurd and offensive,” said Cheah.

Cheah called on Shabudin to acknowledge the need of legislating desire in a society and understand in totality the definition and objective of upholding statutory rape in the country. He reiterated that marriage should not be treated disrespectfully as a means to legitimise rape. He called on Shabudin to reflect, apologise and stop being an impediment to governmental’s commitment and efforts in protecting the rights, dignity and safety of women and children in Malaysia.
