Gerakan: Clarify size of plot to be reclaimed at Gurney Drive

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Gerakan has demanded that the state government clarify the size of land to be reclaimed along the Gurney Drive foreshore.

Its treasurer Ng Fook On said contrasting figures had been given by the state government and this had brought confusion to the people.

He said that in February last year, the state revealed there would be 131 acres (53ha) of reclaimed land along the shoreline.

However, he claimed that state exco member Lim Hock Seng later said 191 acres (77.3ha) would be reclaimed on the coast during the state assembly sitting in November last year.

“I hope the Penang government will clarify the matter and stop the confusion,” he told a press conference at Komtar yesterday.

“If they fail to do this, Penangites might start to query whether there has been a cover-up by the state government.

“This would not have happened during the time of the previous Gerakan-led state government.”

Ng said the state government had remained mum on this matter despite queries by his party comrades Ooi Zhi Yi and Jason Loo.

State exco member Jagdeep Singh, who has been tasked to oversee reclamation projects in Penang, said he would respond to the matter today.
