Gerakan picks coordinators in preparation for GE14

GEORGE TOWN: The Gerakan central leadership has appointed coordinators for four parliamentary constituencies and 11 state constituencies in Penang in preparation for the next general election.

State Gerakan chairman Teng Chang Yeow said these seats were those contested by the party in the 2013 General Election.

He said the party had yet to appoint the coordinators for the Kebun Bunga and Machang Bubuk state constituencies which its candidates had also contested in.

Gerakan contested in four parliamentary and 13 state seats in Penang in 2013. It lost in all the seats.

Besides Kebun Bunga and Machang Bubok, the other state seats were Pantai Jerejak, Batu Uban, Air Itam, Batu Lanchang, Tanjung Bungah, Datuk Keramat, Sungai Pinang, Padang Kota, Pulau Tikus, Bukit Tengah and Bukit Tambun.

The four parliamentary seats it contested in were Bukit Bendera, Tanjong, Jelutong and Batu Kawan.

Teng said whether the coordinators would eventually become candidates for the general election depended very much on their performance, contribution and participation in their respective areas.

“The likelihood for the coordinators to become candidates is there but it is not automatically.

“They have to prove themselves that they are capable of represen-ting the party in the general election,” he told reporters at the Bukit Bendera Gerakan Chinese New Year open house at the Chay Yeong Tong Sin Quah Chuah Chong Soo in Codrington Avenue.

He said the party would release the names of the coordinators later.

Penang Gerakan secretary Hng Chee Wey introduced himself as the Gerakan coordinator for Tanjung Bungah in his speech yesterday.

He also introduced Gerakan vice-president Dr Asharuddin Ahmad as the Bukit Bendera parliamentary coordinator and Penang Gerakan publicity bureau chief Ooi Zhi Yi as the Pulau Tikus coordinator.
