Trifling speech hurts two parties, MCA and Gerakan slam Tengku Adnan

Penang, February 7 – The proposal made by the Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan to make Penang a federal territory has drawn criticisms from leaders of Penang Barisan Nasional component parties MCA and Gerakan, describing Tengku Adnan’s proposal as a “straw that broke the camel’s back” to the weaker parties such as MCA and Gerakan.

Penang MCA chief Tan Teik Cheng said “Tengku Adnan’s statement makes no sense, it has caused impact and damages to Penang MCA.”

In an interview with the Guang Ming Daily News, he said MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai had made clear MCA’s stance yesterday by saying that Tengku Adnan’s remark did not represent BN’s stand.

“His proposal had never been discussed in the Barisan supreme council, and also the proposal involved the amendment to the Federal Constitution, it must get two-third majority Members of the Parliament from both sides of the political divide in order to be passed in the Parliament,” he added.

He stressed that Penang MCA disagreed with the proposal, MCA also firmly opposed to this proposal.

“Although Tengku Adnan made this proposal improvisational, but Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng seems to have hit the jackpot,” he said.

He said irresponsible Barisan leaders would always create chances for DAP to attack Penang BN, helping DAP to garner Chinese votes.

“To the native Penangites, the proposal to include Penang in the federal territory is unacceptable and also can’t be implemented,” he added.

He opined that as a senior leader, Tengku Adnan should think twice before making any statement, especially such a remark should not have been uttered by a senior political leader.

Hng Chee Wey:  Merely a political gimmick

Penang Gerakan liaison secretary Hng Chee Way said in an interview that the proposal was just a political gimmick.

He said apart from the requirement to have two-third majority support to get the amendment passed in the Parliament, it also must be passed in the Penang state legislative assembly hall with two-third majority. Just ask yourself whether the Penang Pakatan Harapan would support the proposal?

According to him, Tengku Adnan’s proposal was non-existence as it involved the Parliament and state legislative assembly in amending the Federal Constitution.

In other words, if the amendment to the Federal Constitution is passed by the Penang state assembly, it definitely is not supported by Gerakan, MCA or Umno, as Pakatan Harapan has the most number of state assemblymen which constituted more than two-third.

He advised Lim Guan Eng to stop shouting outside and misleading the people, without the full support of Pakatan Harapan’s state assemblymen, the proposal would not be able to materialize.

“I feel that whether Penang is to be included in federal territory, the ball is now at the feet of Pakatan Harapan,” he said.

He said ever since the proposal was made, DAP had capitalized on it and made used of it to incite the people in every event.

As Penang Gerakan chairman Teng Chang Yeow had mentioned, this was the best Chinese New Year present given by Tengku Adnan to DAP to attack MCA and Gerakan.

He stressed that whether Penang would be made a federal territory is not for Tengku Adnan or Lim Guan Eng to decide, as it involved the amendment to the Federal Constitution and would not be easily passed through, it is a political issue that should not even exist.
