Mouth taped but Teng vows not to be silenced

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Gerakan chief Teng Chang Yeow, who is being sued for defamation by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, today appeared at a press conference with his mouth taped.

He had earlier walked into the room at the state Gerakan headquarters wearing a face mask, which he removed to reveal his taped mouth.

He let the media take photos of him with several state party leaders, but signalled he would not be speaking, and waved a copy of his written statement instead.

A couple of minutes later he left the room as reporters trailed him with questions, including how long he planned to keep up the protest by taping his mouth shut.

He removed the tape and said: “Today it is me, tomorrow it is you all. The next day, it is the normal, common rakyat.”

A state Gerakan staff then handed out face masks to reporters with an X taped over each.

Lim is suing Teng for claiming he had caused the Penang Development Corporation to lose RM220 million in profits when he turned down a joint-venture deal, and accepted another that only generated a RM140 million profit for the state investment arm.

Lim however denied there was such a joint-venture deal and demanded Teng show proof or apologise.

In his written statement today, Teng vowed that he would continue to “dish out new information on Pulau Jerejak and other land deals in the coming months”.

He said he saw Lim’s legal demand as a form of intimidation to stop him from making more revelations about Pulau Jerejak.

“It is also intended to send a message to others, especially NGOs (non-governmental organisations), from raising public interest issues, that they will also face the same legal action.

“I am not going to be silenced by this. I urge NGOs to speak out on issues of public importance and not to be intimidated by his action against me,” he said.

Teng, who also heads Penang Barisan Nasional, said his lawyer had responded to Lim’s notice and he would answer in court.
