17 MPs Commissioned As MMEA Honorary Officers

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- Seventeen Members of Parliament (MPs), including three ministers and three deputy ministers, have been commissioned as Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) honorary officers of maritime today.

They are Jerai MP, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir; Teluk Intan MP, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Mah Siew Keong; and Tanjong Karang MP who is also Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar.

Other recipients include Balik Pulau MP, who is also Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya; Tawau MP, who is also Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching; and Silam MP, who is also Plantation Industries and Commodities Deputy Minister Datuk Datu Nasrun Datu Mansur.

Shahidan said the award was in recognition of the role of MPs as local leaders who could mobilise action committees under them in the event of threats that could harm the security of Malaysian waters.

"They can also coordinate all local leaders to assist the MMEA when necessary," he said at the wearing of rank ceremony held at the Parliament House here.

Shahidan said the MPs were also the eyes and ears of the government in disseminating information regarding the safety aspects.

Also present at the ceremony was MMEA director-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Puzi Ab Kahar.
