Traders from all over Malaysia to converge at food carnival

FOR THREE days in December, hawkers from all Malaysia are set to converge at Ipoh’s famous Tong Sui Kai (Dessert Street) near SJKC Sam Tet for the very first Malaysia Food Carnival.

Organised by the National Petty Traders Association, there will be more than 100 hawker stalls selling culinary delicacies of different races to welcome visitors from Dec 2 to 4.

Association president Yow Boon Choon said of the 100 stalls, 50 of them will be Tong Sui Kai’s resident hawkers, while another 50 will be rented out to hawkers from other states.

“They will be bringing in food that is famous and special to their respective states so visitors will be able to taste the very best of Malaysian delicacies,” he told a press conference last Friday.

Yow said the fair, which aims to attract around 200,000 people, will start at 2pm on Dec 2.

“Every day around 6pm, there will be a lineup of activities that we have arranged to entertain visitors. These include a karaoke competition on the first night; singing performances, magic show, mask changing performance, lucky draws, and colourful clowns to play with children on the second night,” he said.

On the third and final night, Yow said Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong will be present as a guest-of-honour.

“Datuk Seri (Mah) has supported the organising of this event through sponsorships, as he likes the idea of hawkers from all over Malaysia converging in one place in Ipoh. He believes this will draw more tourists to Perak, which has been named as one of the must-visit places in the world for the year 2017,” he said, adding that this will add to set the momentum for Visit Perak Year 2017.

Yow also said the event took over three months of fundraising and planning to organise, and hopes it will be successful enough to hold again next year.
