Police behaving in undemocratic and lawless manner – Gerakan Youth

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18: Gerakan Deputy Youth Chief Andy Yong has come down hard on the police over their decision to raid the Bersih office on the eve of the rally.

“What are the police trying to prove by raiding Bersih office a day before the assembly?

“I do not condone any acts that want to overthrow a government in an undemocratic manner but we must understand we do not live in a lawless country.

“The authorities should not interpret the laws according to their whims and fancies,” said Andy in a statement today.

Yong asked in what way are Bersih’s activities that would deem for it to be detrimental to parliamentary democracy as stipulated under sec 124C.

“If it is because of tomorrow’s assembly why don’t they raid Red Shirts premise as well?

“Or is there any prove that by accepting George Soros donation Bersih is also attempting to commit an act against parliamentary democracy?” questioned the lawyer.

Yong said that to constitute an offence under Section 124C of the Penal Code, an attempt activity to overthrow parliamentary democracy, or undermine parliamentary democracy, must be proven.

“PAA allows their peaceful assembly tomorrow, it is also the citizens’ constitutional right.

“If it is the IGP who ordered such raid, he should not take the law in his own hands. Neither are we living in a police state.

“By doing so, it will make most people especially from the urban to hate the government more,” said
Yong.

Police have also arrested Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin and Bersih 2.0 secretary Mandeep Singh during the raid today.

Mandeep had earlier posted on twitter “Bukit Aman in our office. Want to rampas (seize) all our barang (belongings). It’s a raid under 124C.”
