Bersih, Red Shirts should contest in GE14, not in the streets

Gerakan Youth chief calls on the leaders of both NGOs to forget personal egos and cancel their demonstrations planned for November 19.

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan Youth has urged Bersih 2.0 and the Red Shirts not to fight in the streets.

“If they wish to fight, they should battle it out in the General Election in 2018,” said Gerakan Youth Chief Tan Keng Liang in a statement.

He added the members of both NGOs should demand their respective leaders contest in GE14. “Be brave, let the voters decide their fate,” he said.

The Gerakan Youth chief also called on the leaders of both NGOs to forget personal egos and cancel their demonstrations planned for November 19.

“No one should compromise the peace in our country,” he said. “They should not risk public safety for whatever personal political agenda they may have.”

Tan was commenting on reports that Bersih 2.0 and the Red Shirts would converge near Dataran Merdeka on November 19.

Previously, he reminded, Gerakan Youth had offered a stadium to Bersih 2.0 to be used for demonstrations.

“Street demonstrations will risk public safety,” said Tan.

In the past few weeks, he added, “we have seen violent clashes between Bersih 2.0 and the Red Shirts”.

He hastened to assure that Gerakan Youth acknowledges the right to assemble peacefully as provided for by the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA).

“This is the reason why we offered Bersih 2.0 our assistance to hold their demonstration in a stadium,” said Tan.
