No PM candidate, no Putrajaya, Gerakan tells Pakatan

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8: Gerakan Youth Chief Tan Keng Liang said that the opposition should first unanimously decide who is their choice of candidate as the Prime Minister before considering being in Putrajaya.

“This is a fundamental matter that must be announced by the Opposition before contesting in any election,” said Tan at the Gerakan headquarters during the party Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM).

Tan said that former  prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would most likely repeat what happened 18 years ago and try to be rid of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim once again.

But this time, he said that, possibly Dr Mahathir’s side would attempt to try and dethrone Anwar as the de facto opposition leader.

“Recently, we have witnessed the announcement by Tun Dr Mahathir where he said that the oppositions candidate as prime minister is Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and not Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“So now the question is, who actually is the oppositions candidate as prime minister? Muhyiddin or Anwar?” asked Tan.

He said that this is a basic decision that ought to have been decided by the opposition, which begs the questions whether the opposition is fit to run Putrajaya.

“What would be the faith of the country if opposition wins the election?” questioned Tan.

He said that in other democratic countries, there is no such thing as the opposition parties not knowing who their choice of candidate would be.

“Why hide the name if you have a good candidate,” said Tan.

Their weakness not our strength

However, Tan urged the Gerakan Youth not to take for granted the tospy turvy condition in the opposition coalition as a sign of the oppositions weakness as their strength.

“We should build on our strength, not the weakness of others,” said Tan.

He said that the Gerakan Youth ought to work hard to solidify their machinery with Barisan Nasional (BN) and place importance on the principles and the fundamentals of Gerakan’s mission.
