Wanita Gerakan: Monitor Government projects worth below RM500mil as well

PETALING JAYA: Wanita Gerakan chief Datuk Tan Lian Hoe (pic) has suggested that the Auditor-General and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) expand its monitoring mechanism to include Government projects worth below RM500mil.

Tan was responding to a recent announcement by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa that they had agreed to include the Auditor-General and the MACC in all government projects worth RM500mil and above as a necessary and proactive measure to curb corruption and abuses in the public sector.

In a statement on Wednesday, Tan welcomed the announcement and said that the move to introduce "an extra layer of oversight" to monitor big government projects reflected its commitment to stop and prevent systemic corruption and abuses in the public sector.

However, Tan added that "small projects, regardless of its value" should also be subjected to the same "oversight mechanism as proposed to further reduce the opportunities of corruption".

"We were appalled by reports of completed projects which failed to comply with the requirement and with poor quality that suggested corrupt practices and abuses in public sector especially with the corrupted bidding process and public procurement.

"Every project, big or small, regardless of its value should be carefully audited and monitored to ensure transparency and accountability," said Tan.

Tan said that the issue of corruption in the public sector would not be addressed comprehensively and effectively, as it is likely that the RM500mil threshold could be exploited.

Meanwhile, Tan also said that it was necessary for the Government to introduce extra oversight to all projects to "enhance transparency and abuses on all fronts" as Government projects were financed using public funds.
