Gerakan welcomes political financing reform proposals

PETALING JAYA: Gerakan welcomes the 32-point recommendation for political donations and funding announced by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Paul Low recently.

In a statement on Monday, Gerakan's political funding law study committee chairman Datuk Dr Lim Thuang Seng (pic) expressed support for the recommendations that will be submitted to the Cabinet soon and subsequently tabled in Parliament for debate.

Low, the chairman of the National Consultative Committee On Political Funding (JKNMPP) on Friday outlined 32 proposals – including introducing a Political Donations and Expenditure Act – to improve integrity and political funding.

Dr Lim said the recommendations met the purpose, necessity as well as public expectation on political funding reforms and should be supported by both sides of the political divide.

He said rejection by PKR's Rafizi Ramli and Tian Chua on the proposed reforms was unreasonable and a proof of the Opposition's hypocrisy.

"I see little reason to be apprehensive or reject the fair and well-intended initiative by the Government to enhance accountability and transparency in political funding. The Opposition should act beyond partisan differences and support the recommendations with open arms," said Dr Lim.

"Don't they agree on the need to curb increasing monetisation in politics with political funding reform? I hope they realise that their excuses to reject the political funding law are hypocritical and unconvincing.

"It is time that the Opposition walk the talk on their much-vaunted political morality and be part of amelioration efforts," he said.

Dr Lim said he was glad that Gerakan's views and input in a memorandum previously submitted to the committee had been adopted in the 32-point recommendation.
