Gerakan says health not ‘most important’ criteria for GE candidates

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 — Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said today good health should not be the most important factor for candidates in the general election, after an MCA leader suggested that potential candidates undergo mandatory medical checks.

“For Gerakan, the most important factor is the will to fight (for BN). Yes, health matters but what matters most is the will to fight.

“We will look into it but do not say it is the most important factor,” he told reporters here.

MCA deputy president and Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai recently suggested all candidates for the next general election undergo medical checks.

He said health was very important to enable elected candidates to discharge their duties effectively, and that the MCA would make this mandatory for candidates selected by the party.

Responding to this, Koh said today his party had its own mechanisms to gauge a potential candidate’s ability to be an effective lawmaker.

“We will know our potential candidates whether they are healthy or not... we conduct checks, along with other factors.”
