GERAKAN ELECTION:MAH SIEW KEONG IS NEW PARTY PRESIDENT

Gerakan secretary general Datuk Mah Siew Keong has been elected the new party president after the conclusion of the party polls today.

He comfortably defeated his challenger, Penang Gerakan Chairman Teng Chang Yeow by a 509 vote majority.

Datuk Mah emerged the winner for the president post after garnering 1,086 votes while his challenger Teng obtained 577 votes.

Speaking to reporters Datuk Mah urged Gerakan members to close ranks and work together in helping the party regain public support.

The post of deputy president went to Kedah chairman, Dr Cheah Soon Hai who defeated his Kuala Lumpur counterpart Ma Woei Chyi.

The three vice presidential posts were won by Asharuddin Ahmad, A. Kohilan Pillay and Teo Eng Tee.

A total 1,640 Gerakan delegates cast their votes today to elect the new leadership.

The party polls comes a few months after Gerakan's dismal performance in the 13th General Election, where the party only won one parliamentary and three state seats, its worst electoral showing its 44-year history.
