Please, Mr MP, no more sexist remarks Press statement by Jayanthi Devi Balaguru, Wanita Gerakan Secretary General and Federal Territories Wanita Gerakan Chief

Wanita Gerakan Secretary General Jayanthi Devi Balaguru has condemned Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin for making sexist remarks on Monday, saying the remarks were unwarranted and uncalled for.

Jayanthi said Bung Mokhtar’s behaviour was disgraceful, distasteful and unbecoming of an MP, especially when the remarks were said at the Dewan Rakyat, an August House.

Bung Mokhtar had said that woman drivers were the leading cause of high accident rate on the road.

Jayanthi recalled that it was not the first time Bung Mokhtar had uttered sexist remarks and “he seems to enjoy it.”

In 2007, Bung Mokhtar had also made a sexist statement during a heated debate about the issue of ceiling leakage at the Dewan Rakyat. Bung Mokhtar was quoted as saying "Mana ada 'bocor'? Batu Gajah pun 'bocor' tiap-tiap bulan juga,” which at that time was directed at Batu Gajah MP, Fong Po Kuan.

Jayanthi agreed with the Prime Minister Datuk Najib Abdul Razak’s stand that the government does not condone sexist remarks and that the government upholds the status of women.

Jayanthi also said that the Kinabatangan MP needs to be reminded that women are also voters in the country and the votes carry equal weight as men’s votes.

She said since the MP had insulted all woman drivers in this country, he should make an apology.

Bung Mokhtar yesterday claimed that his remarks on Monday in the Dewan Rakyat had been manipulated, causing him to be singled out by women’s groups so much so that he felt “sexually harassed.”

Jayanthi said the “backfire” on Bung Mokhtar was to teach him a lesson and hopefully he would learn the lesson.
