SET UP TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION ON MAY 13

PRESS STATEMENT BY

GERAKAN NATIONAL PRESIDENT

DATUK DR DOMINIC LAU HOE CHAI

MAY 15, 2019

On the 50th anniversary of the May 13 incident in 1969, Gerakan National President Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai said Malaysians should know the truth, remember and avoid racial conflict from recurring again. He echoed calls on the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government to set up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to uncover the truth on that fateful and pave way for reconciliation.

Dominic Lau said with the new PH government in power, it is timely and necessary to re-examine different stories and accounts about the May 13 incident. We need to establish the truth on what really happened on that day, who caused the violence, was it politically motivated and how many casualties, these are important questions that Malaysians need to know as historical truths and facts.

“Many Malaysians question the credibility of the official version of the tragedy, which is the reason why the tragedy has long been viewed as an unhealed wound on the nation’s psyche, it is commonly used by politicians to create fear and disharmony.”

“It is time we face it with maturity, openness and democratically, I believe most Malaysians are ready for it following the landmark 14th General Election, the PH government should heed public calls for the setting up of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission.”

Dominic Lau believes the setting up of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission would pave way for reconciliation between communities and encourage acceptance of the past. It would help Malaysians to move beyond the May 13 episode collectively.

“We owe it to the victims, survivors and families to keep working to prevent racial conflict and preserve harmony, the setting up of Truth and Reconciliation Commission is symbolic and important move by the PH government to begin with, it is not about race and should not be racialized, the people only hope for truth and reconciliation.”
