Wawasan Open University

Gerakan’s Party’s vision to set up a virtual university took
another giant step towards reality when a groundbreaking ceremony was held
in Penang on January 8, 2006 for the Wawasan Open University. The groundbreaking marks the culmination of an idea first
Delegates Conference in 1999. In 2007, Road to Dawn Charity Premier was organised to support the university.

Wawasan Education Foundation
(WEF)
WEF was established on 21
March 2000 under the Companies Act 1965 with the primary aim of receiving
funds and administering such funds for the promotion of education,
charitable purposes and scientific activities, and more specifically, to
carry out the following major objectives:
- Fostering, developing and improving education of all kinds
consistent with the National Education Policy.
- Setting up of scholarships and bursaries and rendering
financial assistance in the form of interest-free educational loans to
needy and deserving students, irrespective of race or religion, so as to
enable them to pursue higher education and/or attain university
qualifications in institutions of higher education within Malaysia or in
other countries.
- Providing research and project grants to project
researchers and offering financial assistance to human development
institutions and other organisations that support the objectives of
WEF.
The
founders of WEF were:
- Datuk Seri Dr. Lim Keng Yaik
Minister of Primary
Industries
- Datuk Kerk Choo Ting
Deputy Minister of International
Trade and Industry
- Mr. Chia Kwang Chye
Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry
of Energy, Communications and Multimedia
- Datuk Ng Chiang Chin
Company Director
Any
donation to WEF is exempted from tax as it has obtained the approval from
the Inland Revenue Board (Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri) for the purpose of
Section 44(6) of the Income Tax Act 1967 with effect from 1 October 2000.
This approval from the Inland Revenue Board has been duly gazetted on 21
December 2000. WEF will issue an official receipt for any donation
received. The
main donors to WEF are the Yeap Chor Ee Charitable Trust, other charitable
organisations and foundations, multi-national corporations, companies,
guilds, associations, Gerakan Party members, supporters, sympathisers as
well as members of the public. The
major part of all donations received by WEF will be used as financial
assistance to the needy and deserving students of the College. This means
that more students can join the College as they will receive scholarships,
bursaries or study loans. The rest of the donations will be channeled
towards the development of community education in order to reach out to a
wider sector of the population and to make education available to them
irrespective of their qualifications.
WEF chose Kolej
Disted-Stamford primarily because of the College's premier position in
Penang as a well-managed, caring and environmentally friendly institution
whose founders were educators at heart and who were motivated to spread
education to a wider audience through distance learning.
