The proposal to set up a Confucius Institute in Malaysia is welcomed. Not only will this propagate the noble values of an ancient civilisation, it would also illustrate that learning the good traits of another culture is in no way detrimental to the multi-racial fabric of our Malaysian society. For instance, one of the tenets of Confucianism is respect for parents and elders. Surely, no community would dispute this. In fact, it would be good if the concept is pursued further so that the teachings of other old and respected civilisations can be brought to our youth and population at large. For example during the ancient Indian, Mesopotamian and Egyptian eras, great strides were made, not only in philosophy and social development but also invention, agriculture and innovation. People learned to co-operate and live together as a community. They emphasised human values and wisdom, qualities which should be acceptable to all, regardless of race or religion.
